County lines drug dealer, 21 is the first to be jailed under new modern slavery laws

An article from the Daily Mail has been published reporting that Zakaria Mohammed - a 21 year old from Birmingham - trafficked three children across several counties where he forced them to sell heroin and crack cocaine has been jailed in a landmark case.

  • They were transported from Birmingham to Lincoln to work as 'workhorses' 
  • He was caught when two boys and a girl were found in a one-bedroom flat

Liberty Protection Safeguards - 5 things you need to know

On the 16th July, Parliament held it's first debate on the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Bill in the House of Lords. During the session, peers discussed the government’s proposed Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) model, which will replace the current Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards system (DoLS) after the bill becomes law. The LPS is designed to provide a much less bureaucratic system than DoLS for authorising health and social care arrangements that involve a deprivation of liberty to which a person cannot consent.

All progress made on Prevent work locally has been highlighted in the Prevent Annual Report published and shared with partners.

Office of the Public Guardian: Annual Report 2017/18 & Business Plan 2018/19 Published now!

On 19 July 2018, the Office of the Public Guardian's Annual Report and Accounts for 2017 to 2018 was laid before parliament and is now published on GOV.UK.

They have also recently published the OPG 2018/19 business plan which sets out their business priorities for the coming year and the future.
