In 2017, Parliament voted in support of the Government’s proposal that all primary schools, including maintained schools, academies and independent schools, would be required to teach Relationships Education.  All secondary schools, including maintained schools, academies and independent schools, will be required to teach Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), replacing the current subject of Sex and Relationship Education. Any decision to also make PSHE compulsory will apply to all schools – maintained schools and academies, both primary and secondary. These schools will join independent schools in having to teach this subject.

On 19th December, the DfE have launched a survey asking for views on how to update the existing Sex and Relationship guidance used by schools in England. Pupils are currently taught about relationships, health and the wider world through Sex and Relationship (SRE) and/or Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) lessons.  The guidance was last updated in 2000 and is now out of date.

The DfE are looking into how these subjects can be improved, to ensure that pupils are being taught the knowledge that they need to thrive in the modern world.

Who can complete the survey?

  • Parents and carers
  • School and college staff, including governors
  • Voluntary and community organisations
  • Other education professionals
  • Any other interested organisations and individuals

The survey asks for views on a number of topics related to these subjects and should take around 30 minutes to complete.  The DfE have stated that the views gathered from the survey will help towards refining thinking and proposals for the subjects.

Closing date for the survey completion is by 12th February 2018.
