The mother was found guilty of FGM offences in February 2019, against her 3 year old daughter and was also given a further two years for other offences. This is the first time that anyone has been convicted of this crime in the UK since it was first criminalised by the Female Circumcision Act 1985, more lately replaced by the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003.
The 3 year old girl had to have emergency surgery after the mutilation took place at the family home in August 2017; the police were alerted to the incident by the surgeon at the hospital.
